In the late fifties, Rock’n’Roll had already taken off and the new musical style had become so loud that even sonically strong acoustic guitars like Martin dreadnoughts didn’t have a chance of being heard without amplification. Realising this, Martin offered a new version of their dreadnought-classic D-28E in 1959, now featuring two DeArmond-Pickups and the corresponding controls. Additionally, these guitars didn’t feature the traditional X-bracing of the guitar’s top anymore, but the more robust “ladder”-bracing, giving the top more rigidity and making it less sensitive for feedback. Because this guitar was in the Martin catalogue for the comparatively short period of five years only, used models today are scarce.
